This is bulletin board that is set up right by the space where children wait for buses at my school. I have used lots of cut-outs to show a fall/Halloween theme. The cut outs are in groups of ten. Kindergartners in our school can count to ten; first and second graders can fine combinations of two numbers to make ten. There are owls, multi-colored leaves, ghosts, large pumpkins, small pumpkins, three different kinds of spiders, and bats on the bulletin board. <br />
<br />
Here are a few close-ups.<br />

They came out wonderful! They are painted on wooden blocks that I received for free from <a href="http://www.ruths.org/">Ruth's Reusable Resources</a> a few years ago and have held onto until just the right time. All of the materials used for decorating were leftovers from other projects so the gifts were easy to put together .<br />

using them for many different lessons. For example, the Pig, Pigs,
Piggie book is perfect for teaching first graders to look through a word
because words can have different endings. The Owl Diaries books are
wonderful for teaching children the diary genre, and I included the entire
Mercy Watson series because our class set was torn and tattered from
the loving use of previous classes of first graders.<br /><br />In our
classroom, we read all day long. Children come to school and read in our
class library while they wait for their friends to arrive. They are in
the library if they finish their snack early, and they always have a
book in hand when they wait for buses at the end of the day. These times
are in addition to their regularly scheduled daily literacy block, so
they read, read, read all day long.<br /><br />Thank you to all of the families who donated! You have helped your child, sixteen first graders in this year's class, and future classes of first graders learn to read!<br />

I was nominated by my adult son, Greg. The Hall of Fame inducts nine Maine teachers every year; three from the grade span of kindergarten through fourth grade; three from fifth through eighth, and three from ninth through twelve. Part of my award is throwing out the first pitch at a Portland Sea
Dog's baseball game, which I will do on Friday night, June 23. <br />
<br />
In addition to tickets to the game for six people, unlimited stops at the picnic area for barbeque with all of the fixings, a personalized Sea Dogs jersey, and a Sea Dogs hat, we also received a check for $500.00. Thank you, especially, to Steve Alpren from Unum who was the liaison person between the Hall of Famers and Unum.<br />
<br />
If you are a student alumni's family, feel free to come to the game!<br />

We did three exploratory activities. I was trying to determine if students could sort matter into its states. <br />
<br />
To assess them, I stayed with the students in the first station. There were pictures of many different kinds of matter. You can see that students sorted an ice cream cone, feather, candles, and an apple into the solid pile. In liquids, they sorted soup, water, lemonade, and milk. I was checking to see if all of my students could sort matter. <br />

The consensus after we finished the rotations was that, "You can learn a lot if you explore materials!" </div>

So, I was looking for a cool (literally), new bulletin board idea and I found these penguins on Pinterest. When I spotted them, I thought they would be fun for my students to make, but I noticed that there was no academic goal attached to them. I thought that they could be tied to math if I had students estimate how many cotton balls were in the body of their penguins.<br />
<br />
So, I sent a notice home asking for donations of cotton balls and received quite a few bags! Thank you so much to all of the parents who helped out. Here are some pictures of the completed bulletin board.<br />

Parents often support their child's initial attempts to read by strategically helping them figure out words their child might not know. For example, parents often suggest that their child "sound out" unknown words. Although it is imperative that children learn to decode words, the end goal of reading is to understand what we are reading (i.e. reading comprehension). A strategy that parents can use to support their young child's reading comprehension is <u><i><b>retelling</b></i></u>.<br />
<br />
<b>Retelling</b> is exactly that - retelling a story after it has been read. Reading comprehension is supported when children retell a story to their parents immediately after the child has heard or read the story. When one of my first graders reads a story or has a story read to
them, and then is able to retell the story by telling the characters,
setting, problem, and events of the story in order, I am confident that
he or she has at least minimal comprehension of the story. Throughout these reading sessions, I actively scaffold my
students' understanding of the story by asking them who the characters are, where the
story takes place, what is happening now, what they predict will
happen next, and to identify the problem in the story. Asking questions (particularly open ended questions) promotes additional elaborations of your child's thinking and helps them to think deeper about what they are reading.<br />
<br />
Six and seven year olds learn by touching and so I have created a physical mnemonic to help them retell. (A mnemonic is a device that helps people remember things. ) I use a pipe cleaner with mini-erasers, beads, and ribbons to support childrens' blossoming retelling skills. This is a picture of what I use in school. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IhwzRhPch4o/WBTmWw1ZF9I/AAAAAAAACUU/nLmPkf1Tmrwdb62jMtGaS-rsStfxYmbowCLcB/s1600/IMG_1514.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="297" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IhwzRhPch4o/WBTmWw1ZF9I/AAAAAAAACUU/nLmPkf1Tmrwdb62jMtGaS-rsStfxYmbowCLcB/s400/IMG_1514.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The gingerbread man represents the character(s), the tree is the setting, the red open ribbon is the problem, the white beads are the events, and the tied ribbon with the red bead is the resolution of the problem and the end of the story. To support their retelling, children hold the mnemonic. They touch the mini-erasers and swipe the beads up the pipe cleaner as they retell the story. When they are ready, I will add a heart to represent their favorite part and a mini puzzle piece to represent a connection they have to the story.<br />
<br />
The effects of children's retelling on early language and literacy acquisition have been thoroughly studied. Studies indicate that retelling is an effective strategy for not only promoting reading comprehension as I emphasize here, but also for increasing expressive vocabulary and receptive language skills. In other words, retelling stories deepens their understanding of the story, expands their vocabulary, and also increases their understanding of what people are saying.
<br />
<br />
Of course, not everything we read is in narrative form. Children also love reading non-fiction. Strategies for enhancing understanding of non-fiction text will be the topic of my next post!Mrs. Henriksonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04186919521174864138noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2726976372624295231.post-23636040137769205342016-10-17T17:38:00.000-07:002016-10-17T17:38:00.491-07:00Game BoxesEvery year we play lots and lots of games in first grade, particularly in math. Some of the benefits of playing games are increasing time with family and friends, learning something new and improving one's memory by keeping track of what is happening in the game, and engaging in an activity that does not rely on using a computer screen. Recently I learned that playing games can increase academic achievement up to 20%. I was also thinking about way to connect home and school. I thought that creating a "game box" for each child in my class would provide an opportunity for students to play games at home that we also play in school. <br />
<br />
I sent home activities that my students have practiced at school that parents can play at home with them. Some of the activities my first graders will be able to do individually, some they will need a partner. I plan to send home activities throughout the school year. <br />
<br />
Here are some pictures from the game day roll out!<br />

May 2 through 6 was Teacher Appreciation Week! Our PTA went out of their way to make the week memorable for all of us. Every day they did something special to show their appreciation for the work we all do. I took daily photos to document the events of the week. Although the photos show what they did, they can't begin to capture the appreciation we all feel for making us one of the "Stars" in the lives of their children.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
On Monday, May 2, we walked in to school to find the floor of the professional development room filled with stars. Each star had a name of the staff member - they recreated the red carpet treatment often reserved for Hollywood's stars. </div>

They seem to know just what to say to make another student feel better in one-on-one situations. They know how to almost naturally teach their friends in school, and they have lots of empathy for those who struggle. I had a student last year who fit into that category.<br />
<br />
Although she is now in second grade, she still swings through my class every morning just to connect and maybe pick up some more teaching tricks in case she truly does become a teacher some day. She also likes to practice teaching to my current class. A few days ago she dropped off a note that she wanted my students to edit. Here is the note.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DP99eQq7aQQ/VuIQlhDfvII/AAAAAAAACKI/5LNmcPq6TjkvUnSBS-XDdff7ZRHv5gbzA/s1600/IMG_1290.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DP99eQq7aQQ/VuIQlhDfvII/AAAAAAAACKI/5LNmcPq6TjkvUnSBS-XDdff7ZRHv5gbzA/s320/IMG_1290.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It says, "Find all my misstakes</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
and have fun! <u>Avery</u>.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
dear ms henrickson</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
you Are th Best</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
clas Ever</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
fondly</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
avery</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
(Hope I didn't</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
mess your plans.)"</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So, of course I projected her note on the screen with the document camera. I made a copy of her note for every student in the class and they had to correct it to:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
"Dear Mrs. Henrikson's class,</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
You are the best class ever.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Fondly,</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Avery </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My class was just determined to get it right. They took bright colored markers and fixed all of the "misstakes" that they could find! My ex-student got a chance to teach, and my current class got a chance to learn from a skilled second grader. It was a great lesson!</div>

Cynthia Lewis, a retired special education pre-kindergarten teacher from Massachusetts who taught for 30 years, visited us today. Mrs. Lewis holds a masters degree from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts and is a highly skilled teacher. She did a wonderful job reading <i>Horton Hears a Who </i>to my first graders. The lesson from <i>Horton Hears a Who</i> is, "A person's a person no matter how small."<br />
<br />
Children benefit from the connections they make with members of the community. For example, today they heard a story read in a different voice than my own. Throughout her reading, Mrs. Lewis dropped the end of the line rhyming word and my students predicted the word. She modeled how important reading is throughout our entire life.<br />
<br />
Thank you for coming to class, Mrs. Lewis!<br />

Katie, a 2012 Morse High School graduate, is currently a senior double majoring in biology and psychology at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. Since January, 2015, Katie has been doing research on "CRISP-Cas9 mediated inactivation of KCC4a gene in zebrafish" (according to her resume) and consequently has learned to write lab reports to support the scientific process.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FUz9ntsW4mQ/VsCGctzuEdI/AAAAAAAACJI/ybj0Wc_O9m0/s1600/IMG_1269.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FUz9ntsW4mQ/VsCGctzuEdI/AAAAAAAACJI/ybj0Wc_O9m0/s320/IMG_1269.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Katie as a first grader at Dike-Newell </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
First Katie showed one of her completed lab reports and asked for comments and questions from my students. Many noticed how neat and organized her report was, how long it was, and that it was typed, not written. Katie commented that she had to write her reports in this manner so that her professors could read them and understand her writing. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Then, she asked my students specifically what they knew about the scientific process. Many students could recite the steps: ask a question, generate a hypothesis, gather materials, make observations, and come to a conclusion. She talked about how important it was that their lab reports be neat enough so that they can reread it, and that it was important to be very clear about their observations. This modeling helped my students understand that the quality of their writing matters. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Finally, Katie opened questions and comments to the first graders. They were very curious about what she was researching. She told them that she was researching the gene that controls how big zebrafish can grow. Due to security reasons, Katie could not FaceTime from her lab and show them specifically what she was doing. However, the first graders easily connected her research to zebrafish because I showed them some images of zebrafish after we finished FaceTimeing. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This lesson represented an excellent real life connection between what my students are learning in school today to a job they may want to pursue as an adult. Connecting learning to real world experiences is a practice that research has identified as contributing to deeper learning outcomes for students (Martinez and McGrath, 2014). Consequently, I was not surprised when one student told me, "When I grow up, I want to be a scientist. That was just so exciting."
